Applications are invited for a Consultant in infection post at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

The Department of Clinical Microbiology currently have a full time 10 PA vacancy for a Consultant in infection. Equal consideration will be given to individuals with medical microbiology or joint Microbiology with infectious diseases

Main duties of the job

  • This post it to contribute to the delivery of an infection service to the patients of Royal Cornwall Hospitals' NHS Trust and the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly community working in partnership with other local trusts to deliver high quality healthcare services across the county. Serving a widespread local population, as well as thousands of visitors to Cornwall each year, poses several unique healthcare challenges. The Trust delivers acute medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 415,000 which more than doubles during the busy holiday periods and includes many international travelers.
  • The post-holder will be expected to support infection services and multidisciplinary patient care to liaise in a timely manner with clinicians, hospital staff, medical microbiologists, laboratory staff, general practitioners and health protection consultants concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, control and prevention of infections including the provision of telephone advice.
  • The post-holder will develop relationships with the staff in different clinical areas which may include attending multi-disciplinary team meetings and participating in other clinical or audit meetings as required.

This role will be to join a pre-existing team of Medical and scientific staff based in the clinical microbiology laboratory at eth Royal Cornwall hospital.

Essential

  • CCT in Medical microbiology or medical microbiology and infectious diseases or equivalent, or within 6 months of interview
  • On the GMC specialist register with licence to practice

Essential and desireable

  • Entry in Medical Microbiology or Virology with or without infectious diseases on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent at time of interview oequivalent Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath qualification or equivalent.
  • Broad training and experience in all areas of clinical microbiology
  • Ability to practice independently
  • Experienced in Clinical Audit and Governance and knowledge of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
  • Ability to teach clinical skills and microbiology skills to junior colleagues including those F1/F2 on attachment in department

Desirable

  • Wide medical or surgical experience oPost graduate
  • Post graduate medical qualification
  • Post CCT subspecialty experience
  • Post CCT general microbiology experience
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Attendance at management course
